Scripted podcast course teaser episodes

We’ll be honest: our approach to podcast training isn’t for everyone. Creating an exceptional narrative podcast takes far longer, requires deeper self-examination, and prompts more personal growth than unscripted or interview shows. There is no guarantee you’ll get rich and famous with an exceptional scripted podcast, nor will casual listeners even appreciate the craft.

But we wouldn’t trade it for anything.

If you’re still with us, each of these pieces will help you decide if you’re a Narrative Podcasts kind of audio storyteller. Written, revised, edited, and scored with the same care as episodes of Shelter in Place, each teaser uses a module from our story podcast course curriculum as a prompt. Ranging from 3-7 minutes, these micro-episodes will give you guaranteed inspiration in the time it takes you to sip your morning coffee — and introduce you to how we approach podcast training.

Podcast course module 1why create?

Making a story podcast, especially an indie, is hard. That’s why we start our course by digging into our why. In this personal reflection on creative motivation, hear the voices that try to stop us creating — and then why we should create anyway.

Podcast course module 2great story

“We met online would’ve made Romeo & Juliet a very short, boring play; West Side Story a musical with nothing to sing about.” A four-minute reflection on perhaps the most important element of any good story, from 30-second podcast trailer to multi-book series: conflict.

Podcast course module 3creative personality

This module will help you get to know the hidden character you bring to every story podcast you’ll ever make: yourself. Our creative personality defines the intersection of audio storytelling and creative living — and here’s why that’s a good thing.

Podcast course module 4great sound

This module teaches secrets of recording and narration, with a audio quality chart, mic tests, example photos and audio clips, audio editing tutorials, and exercises. But what’s the emotional impact of great sound? Why does it matter so much? This episode brings it to life.

If the full scripted podcast course isn’t right for you at this time, our one-day workshops may be a better fit. Each two-hour session covers one of the key building blocks of narrative podcasting: scriptwriting and editing; recording and narration; and audio editing and sound design. Join live, or get the video and slides later. See workshops here.

Podcast course module 6finding your voice(over)

We’ve all heard that we’re supposed to “find our voice” as audio creators — but what if we don’t like how we sound? A personal reflection on my journey in podcast narration, with a number of pro narration and recording tips from this module included.

Podcast course module 7let’s get personal

Most of us would agree: the last three years have been rough! So what do we do as creators with life’s bumps and bruises? A short reflection on the healing power of processing things through a story podcast.

Podcast course module 10the messy middle

Sometime in every big creative project, we all find ourselves in the messy middle: clutter everywhere, vanishing vision, and flagging motivation. Hear insights on editing and creative process, inspired by a little Davis family moment of tension.

Podcast course module 14beyond networking

Have you been working from home the last three years? Do big groups give you hives? Does self-promotion make you want to pull your hoodie over your head? Me too! This one’s for all of you.

(Or if you’re waiting for the remaining teaser episodes to drop, you can always hear more of our work and learn about the founder and instructors, Laura Joyce Davis and Nate Davis.)
